The dining room in this lakeside condo was fortunate to have floor to ceiling windows that boasted 180’ views. The new tan wall colour softened the transition between the interior and exterior and made the space feel larger. The celery green fabric on the drapery was selected based on colour palette in the area rug. The room was completed with the hanging of an open styled, graceful chandelier.

This condo hallway connecting the Foyer to the Living/Dining was problematic because it very long at 18 feet, but only 4 ½ feet wide. To expand the space the walls on one side were paneled with large expanses of mirror. The opposite side was fitted with a custom built in to meet the clients request for maximum book storage. The walls, trim, built in and ceiling are all painted the same warm white tone. New hardwood flooring flows through this 'new hallway' into the Living room but the Foyer is still defined by the existing marble floor.

This kitchen makeover was achieved solely with paint. The original stained cabinetry made the kitchen feel dark and extremely low in proportion to the 9’0” ceiling height in this area. By painting the cabinets the same colour as the bulkhead and ceiling, the perception is that the cabinetry is higher, which in the end gave the kitchen an airier, fresher feeling.

This great room was in need of colour and a focal point. The fireplace being the most natural focal point, tended to feel squat and the overall wall needed some surface decoration. A new area rug, casual but colourful was the starting point for this area. Upholstery fabrics, window treatments and a new wall colour brought life to the space. An over-mantel was custom built on top of the existing mantel and moldings, lighting and artwork were added this wall, creating both a focus as well as an area to display artwork.

Having just returned from 3 weeks in Bangkok and Bali I can personally confirm that ‘global’ influences are happily at work in the world of interior design. Have a look at some of these gorgeous colours. And yes,….they really do paint all of the Bangkok cabs in fluorescent, metallic fuchsia!

Yippee!!! The western world of interior design has finally lost its fear of colour! Everyone at Barnard & Speziale is so excited to again use vibrant, more saturated colours for our clients. We are painting ceilings in tangerine, using teal and tourquoise in artwork and pillows and colour-blocking feature walls in royal blue and emerald green. We are ‘colour crazed’ after a long run of beige and taupe.
That’s not to say that we aren’t still creating lots of livable neutral backgrounds, but now the accent colours are really bright, lively and intense. Clients are moving from Bashful to Bold!!!

This dated guest bathroom was in much need of a complete overhaul. A dark stained vanity was selected to compliment the furniture in the adjoining room, while the blue wall colour was reflected in the frosted blue mosaic tile found the in the shower. Instead of a typical shower curtain or sliding glass door for the tub/shower enclosure a glass panel was permanently installed with an attached curved glass panel on the hinge.

This waterside condo underwent an extensive makeover, with new flooring, wall treatments and a complete style overhaul. The new design direction was a modern take on British West Indies, with rich, exotic woods, white gauzy linens and intricately woven carpets in indigo blues, coral pinks and crispy white accents. The room is wrapped in a white woven grasscloth, with hints of colour in accessories and artwork. The goal was not to detract from the beautiful vista seen through floor to ceiling windows but to enhance it.

This kitchen, small by some standards presented a number of design challenges. Condo’s which unfortunately are constructed with concrete do not allow for many changes to lighting locations. Lighting was easily added under-cabinet, but that still did not help with task lighting to the island area. A track light layout was designed to provide equal lighting over the entire area of the kitchen. The addition of the hardwood allowed a seamless transition between the main hallway and the dining room and also provided a rich contrast to the hand painted cabinetry.

Originally this great room was painted a soft butter yellow and the wall unit was stained an amber pear colour. The addition of a white woven grasscloth added tremendous warmth to the room as well as allowing the details of the furnishings to shine. A shallow tray ceiling which lacked architectural appeal was designed to accommodate three large stained beams. A variety of heavy white throws (and a couple fur throws) draped over the sofas and chairs are perfect for curling up a cold winters night!
